![]() ![]() Lakunle does not believe in the payment of bride price hence, he lost Sidi to Baroka who tricks and seduces her. She bent on the payment of her bride price as the tradition demands. Sidi is the village belle and the arrow head of the conflict in the play. He contributes to the conflict in the play. Charactersīaroka is the Baale (the king) of Ilujinle village and a symbol of African tradition. The play is also seasoned with songs and dances which are parts of the ingredients of a good African drama. There is also the use of Flashbacks, play within the play, and Mime to bring back past events. All the actions in the text take place in a day. ![]() ![]() The play is divided into three parts Morning, Noon and Night. The title of the text is also metaphorical, Baroka, the village head is the Lion while Sidi, the village belle, who is the bone of contention is the Jewel. Sidi in the text also stands as an agent that brings out the conflict between the two traditions. ![]() Lakunle, the village teacher represents the western civilization while Sidi, the village belle and Baroka, the village head symbolize the African tradition.
